MARTIN, Tenn. – Sophie Diouf provided her first career double-double for the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team this afternoon but the Skyhawks dropped a 3-1 decision (17-25, 18-25, 27-25, 18-25) to Morehead State.
A sophomore who transferred from Southern, Diouf accounted for team-highs of 10 kills and 11 digs while adding four blocks. Dylan Sulcer also secured her second double-double of the season with 24 assists and a team-best 11 digs while Maddy Gladson equaled Diouf with a team-high 10 kills.
Mari Haas (two service aces) and Rylee Key (career-best seven blocks) also paced UT Martin, who is now 6-9 overall with a 1-3 mark in Ohio Valley Conference play.
The Eagles (6-8, 2-2 OVC) scored six of the first eight points before Gladson's third kill of the set pulled the Skyhawks within one at 9-8. Morehead State then went on a 6-0 run and despite back-to-back kills out of Luli Arcucci that gave UT Martin some late momentum, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the match. Gladson slammed down five kills in six swings for a scorching .667 hitting percentage in the opening set.
Kills from Gladson and Key helped the Skyhawks claim a 3-1 advantage in the second set but Morehead State responded with a four-point lead at the technical timeout. UT Martin trailed by six points during the late stages of the set before kills by Diouf and Key sliced the Skyhawk deficit to 21-18. However, the Eagles scored the final four points of the set. Sulcer assisted on 10 of UT Martin's dozen kills in the second stanza.
The Skyhawks fought back to take a third set that included 11 ties and seven lead changes. Both sides swapped early leads until four unanswered Morehead State points handed UT Martin an 11-8 deficit. The Skyhawks eventually chipped away to take a 19-18 advantage and staved off match point (24-23) to send the match into the fourth set after back-to-back kills by Diouf broke a 25-25 tie. Haas (two service aces) and Key (four blocks) guided UT Martin in the third set.
The Eagles tallied six of the first seven points in the fourth set. Diouf later had a hand in three consecutive points (two kills, one block assist) to get the Skyhawks back within striking distance at 11-8. However, that was as close as UT Martin would get for the remainder of the match as an ensuing 5-0 Morehead State run thwarted a potential Skyhawk comeback. Carly Mueller posted four kills on five attacks (.800 hitting percentage) to top UT Martin in the final stanza.
The Skyhawks are back at home next weekend, hosting OVC foe Eastern Illinois. UT Martin will take on the Panthers at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 before the 2 p.m. series finale is set for Saturday, Oct. 10.
