
Skyhawks Fall To Mississippi State

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team could not find its offensive rhythm today in a 3-0 setback (25-15, 25-11, 25-15) to Southeastern Conference member Mississippi State in the Blue Raider Bash.
Abby Freund topped the Skyhawks with eight digs today while Carly Mueller rejected a team-best three blocks. Maddy Gladson, Kylie Surratt and Ella McFarland also added two blocks apiece for UT Martin (0-3), who received a team-high eight kills out of Kayla Bryant this afternoon.
The Bulldogs (4-0) scored the first four points of the match before a kill from Bryant got the Skyhawks on the scoreboard. After an assisted block by Mueller and Gladson trimmed UT Martin's deficit to 12-8, Mississippi State went on a 6-0 run on the way to the opening set victory. Bryant (three kills) led the Skyhawk offense while Mueller's three blocks paced three UT Martin players with multi-block efforts in the first set.
A Dylan Sulcer kill shaved the Skyhawk deficit to 5-3 to begin the second set. The Bulldogs scored 13 of the next 15 points. McFarland posted a kill, an assist and a service ace in UT Martin's final four points but Mississippi State was able to take a 2-0 advantage in the match. Four separate Skyhawks claimed kills in the middle set but the Bulldogs were able to hit .500 in 22 swings.
Bryant had a pair of early kills in the third set but Mississippi State took a 9-3 lead. Bryant and Kristin Phillips joined forces for two kills apiece during a four-point span midway through the set but the Bulldogs hit .435 to complete the match. Bryant owned four of UT Martin's seven kills in the final set, hitting .286 in seven attacks.
The Skyhawks continue the three-day Blue Raider Bash tomorrow, facing Marist at 1 p.m.
