Xoinis Tops OVC Championships Field As UT Martin Ranks Second After Day 1

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Redshirt senior Jonathan Xoinis leads the 55-man Ohio Valley Conference Championships field through 18 holes as the University of Tennessee at Martin ranks second in the team standings at Dalhousie Golf Club.
Xoinis was 4-under par through eight holes today, sinking a tournament-best six overall birdies for a final tally of 68 (-4). That mark leads six others by one stroke for the individual lead as the Chattanooga, Tenn. native is one of only eight players to card a red score today. He ranks second in the event in par-4 scoring (3.80, -2) and fifth in par-3 scoring (2.75, -1) to go along with a team-best 10 pars.
The Skyhawks shot an even-par 288 today, trailing only Little Rock (282, -6) on the team leaderboard. UT Martin collected a tournament-high 20 birdies and did major damage on par-5's, topping the event in average score (4.55, -9) on those holes.
All-OVC first teamer Jackson Twerdahl managed five birdies on the way to an even-par 72 today, ranking ninth on the player leaderboard. Grant Phillips leads the tournament in par-5 scoring (4.25, -3) and equaled Xoinis for the team lead with 10 pars on the way to a 73 (17th in the standings). Luke Caldwell managed three birdies today as part of a 75 as the final countable score in the Skyhawk lineup. Garrett Chumley (78) was responsible for two birdies and one of only three eagles on the day.
UT Martin is part of the last team pairings tomorrow for Round 2, playing alongside Little Rock and Lindenwood (289, +1). Chumley will tee off Hole No. 1 at 10:20 a.m. and will be followed by Caldwell (10:30), Phillips (10:40), Twerdahl (10:50) and Xoinis (11:00).
