Ray Paces Skyhawks On First Of Three Days At People’s Golf Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Redshirt senior Ethan Ray led the way for the University of Tennessee at Martin today during Round 1 of the People's Golf Championship held at the Sea Palms Golf Club.
Competing as an individual, Ray carded a 70 (-1) today, ranking 18th in the deep 120-man field. The Collierville, Tenn. native birdied four of his first six holes before finishing fifth in the field in par-3 scoring (2.80, -1) and first on the Skyhawk squad in par-4 scoring (4.00, E), par-5 scoring (5.00, E) and birdies (five). His 70 is tied with Davidson's Will Tharin for the best score of any of the 20 golfers in the field who are designated as individuals.
As a team, UT Martin shot a 297 (+13) in Round 1 of the 54-hole tournament. Jonathan Xoinis sank three birdies on the way to a 72 and was followed by Jackson Twerdahl's 73 (two birdies). Drew Williams (two birdies) and Garrett Chumley (one birdie) each shot a 76 for countable scores while Luke Caldwell's 77 with two birdies completed the Skyhawk scoring lineup.
The duo of Xoinis and Twerdahl topped UT Martin with a dozen pars apiece while equaling Ray for the team lead in par-5 scoring (5.00, E). Chumley also tied for the best par-5 scoring average (5.00, E) on the team.
The Skyhawks will tee off Hole No. 1 alongside Winthrop and Siena tomorrow morning in 10-minute intervals, starting with Caldwell (7:30 a.m. CT) and following with Xoinis (7:40), Williams (7:50), Chumley (8:00) and Twerdahl (8:10). Ray will start his day off Hole No. 10 alongside scoring lineup members from Mount St. Mary's and Florida A&M.
