Chumley Tied For First Place After Late Round 2 Suspension For Darkness In New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Redshirt senior Garrett Chumley enters tomorrow in a three-way tie for first place out of 96 golfers in the field at the Gulf Coast Collegiate, setting the tone for quite a Round 2 performance by the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team.
Play was suspended at 6 p.m. due to darkness as that was seemingly the only thing that could slow down the Skyhawk momentum. With each member of the UT Martin scoring lineup still lacking 3-4 holes in Round 2, the Skyhawks have built the best score in the 18-team field in the incomplete round – carding a 9-under par (two shots better than tournament co-leaders Central Arkansas and Louisiana-Monroe).
Leading the way for a major UT Martin comeback – currently sitting at 27 strokes better than its final Round 1 score – is Chumley. The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native leads the 96-man field in birdies (11) while ranking second in par-3 scoring average (2.75, -2). He additionally is responsible for team-best scores in par-4 scoring average (4.06, +1) and par-5 scoring average (4.71, -2). His overall score of 3-under par is knotted with Louisiana-Monroe teammates Louis Anceaux (ranked 61st nationally) and Theis Poulsen for the tournament lead with 21 holes left to play tomorrow.
As a team, the Skyhawks rank second in the tournament with 28 birdies – checking in at sixth in the standings (+9). UT Martin moved up four spots up the leaderboard following a 306 (+18) in Round 1.
Chumley owns six birdies as part of his 3-under showing in Round 2. Jonathan Xoinis has matched Chumley for the best Skyhawk score in Round 2, shooting 3-under with five birdies and three holes remaining. Drew Williams (four birdies) is sitting at 2-under in Round 2 with four holes left while Ethan Ray's 1-under with three holes to go (three birdies) gives UT Martin four members of its scoring lineup with red scores so far in the second round.
Luke Caldwell (+5) posted two birdies with three holes remaining in Round 2 while John-Gregory Wilson (+2 with four birdies) has two holes left in his round as an individual.
The Round 2 scores represent a major shift from this morning as Chumley's 72 (five birdies) was the best mark on the team. Williams (77 with one birdie), Caldwell (78 with two birdies) and Ray (79) compiled countable tallies. Xoinis' 82 wrapped up the scoring for the Skyhawk lineup while Wilson managed a 78.
