UT Martin Golf Opens Weather-Shortened Grover Page Classic With Plenty Of Red Scoring

JACKSON, Tenn. – The 15 teams in the 2024 Grover Page Classic field had to wait a little while to officially start the tournament but the lengthy pause didn't alter University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad on Day 1 of the two-day event.
Because of two inches of overnight rain, Round 1 at Jackson Country Club was delayed for nearly five hours as the decision was made to shorten the tournament from 54 to 36 holes. The event's shotgun start got underway at 1 p.m. and the Skyhawks responded with seven individual under-par scores out of a dozen rounds.
As a team, UT Martin shot a 285 (-3), which ranks seventh in the team standings. The five Skyhawks in the scoring lineup combined for 14 birdies and two eagles while the seven UT Martin golfers competing as individuals dialed up 29 birdies and a pair of eagles.
Freshman Cole Isbell paced all Skyhawks in scoring today, posting four birdies with zero bogeys on his way to a 68 (-4). That score ranks fifth in the field of 99 golfers and is three strokes behind Morehead State's Nolan Piazza for the individual lead.
Jackson Twerdahl was responsible for two eagles and two birdies on the way to a 71 as the second countable score in UT Martin's lineup. He was joined by Garrett Chumley (72, four birdies), Jonathan Xoinis (74, two birdies) and Luke Caldwell (74, two birdies).
Teeing it up approximately five miles from his high school alma mater, John-Gregory Wilson accounted for an impressive 69 which included four birdies and an eagle on the scorecard. He ranks 12th in the field (and first out of 24 players competing as individuals) after a highly successful collegiate debut.
Dax Isbell (five birdies), Ethan Ray (three birdies, one eagle), Drew Williams (team-best six birdies) and Jaden Morrell each managed 1-under 71's this afternoon. Luke Beadles corralled four birdies on the way to an even-par 72 while Grant Phillips additionally earned four birdies before finishing with a 75.
On the team leaderboard, Morehead State and Austin Peay share the lead at 275 (-13) with 18 holes looming tomorrow.
The Skyhawks will be paired with Presbyterian and Missouri State for the final round tomorrow, which begins at 8:45 a.m. UT Martin's scoring lineup will be spread out between Holes No. 6-8 while the seven Skyhawk individuals will tee off on Holes No. 15-18.
