Chumley Two Strokes Off Lead, Pacing UT Martin Golf To Third Place After 36 Holes At Pinetree Intercollegiate

KENNESAW, Ga. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team got off to a good start through 36 holes at the Pinetree Intercollegiate, placing third in the field of 10 teams at the tournament hosted by Kennesaw State University.
Leading the way for the Skyhawks in the first two rounds was senior Garrett Chumley, who is in fourth place out of 60 competitors with a 145 (+1). That performance is only two strokes behind co-leaders Claes Borregaard (Kennesaw State) and Connor MacMillan (Georgia State). A Murfreesboro, Tenn. native, Chumley ranks second in the event in birdies (eight), sixth in par-4 scoring (4.15, +3) and ninth in par-5 scoring (4.63, -3).
UT Martin shot a 305 (+17) in Round 1 before posting a 297 (+9) during the afternoon session. Overall, the Skyhawks' 602 (+26) sits third in the team standings behind Kennesaw State (591, +15) and Georgia State (598, +22). UT Martin leads the tournament in par-4 scoring (4.30) and pars (101) while ranking second in par-3 scoring (3.40) and fourth in par-5 scoring (4.90).
In Round 1, Chumley's 75 (+3) included a team-best four birdies as he was followed by Jonathan Xoinis (76, three birdies), Jackson Twerdahl (77, 14 pars) and Luke Caldwell (77, three birdies).
Chumley managed a team-best four birdies with a dozen pars in the second round, wrapping up his day with a 70 (-2). Twerdahl (one birdie, 13 pars) and Caldwell (three birdies) were each responsible for 75's while Cole Isbell (77, one birdie) trimmed three strokes off his morning score.
Overall, Twerdahl (tournament-high 27 pars) and Caldwell are tied for 18th on the player leaderboard with identical scores of 152 (+8). Xoinis registered a 156 (+12) after an 80 in Round 2 while Isbell ranks right behind with a 157 (+13).
Competing as an individual, Grant Phillips tapped in a pair of birdies as part of a 79 in Round 1 before sinking four birdies on the way to a 75 in Round 2. Overall, he ranks 23rd in the field (154, +10) in a return to his home state thanks in large part to a strong par-3 scoring average (3.13, third in the tournament).
The Skyhawks will be paired up alongside Kennesaw State and Georgia State off Hole No. 1 for tomorrow's final round. Isbell will get UT Martin started at 7:45 a.m. CT and will be followed by Xoinis (7:54), Caldwell (8:03), Twerdahl (8:12) and Chumley (8:21). Phillips will tee off Hole No. 10 at 8:12 a.m. CT.
