BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Issa Muhammad, a senior forward on the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team, was crowned as the Ohio Valley Conference Player and Newcomer of the Week today.
Today's announcement marks the first time in school history that the Skyhawks have had three separate players win the OVC Player of the Week award in a single season as Muhammad joins Jacob Crews (Nov. 20) and Jordan Sears (Nov. 27). Muhammad also joins Crews (Nov. 20, 2023), Deville Smith (Dec. 22, 2014) and JC Howe (Dec. 16, 2002) as the only players in UT Martin history to sweep both OVC Player and Newcomer of the Week accolades on the same date.
Muhammad helped the Skyhawks to a sweep over Southeast Missouri (84-58 on Thursday) and Lindenwood (76-67 on Saturday). He collected a pair of double-doubles in a monster week where he averaged 14.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 blocks per game.
Against Lindenwood, Muhammad became just the second OVC player this season to have a double-double with five blocks in a single game – joining Western Illinois' Drew Cisse (12 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks at Green Bay on Dec. 9, 2023). Muhammad compiled 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds while swatting away a career-best five blocks. He also sank a pair of clutch free throws with 53 seconds to go to prevent the Lions from having a chance to make it a one-possession game.
Two days earlier against defending OVC Tournament champion Southeast Missouri, Muhammad recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds in only 28 minutes of playing time.
A 6-9, 245-pound native of Atlanta, Ga., Muhammad ranks fourth in the OVC in rebounding (8.8 per game). In league play, he ranks third in the same category with 8.6 boards per contest, fifth in blocked shots (1.4 per outing) and seventh in field goal percentage (.506). Overall, he is averaging 11.4 points per game on 51.2 percent shooting (84-for-164).
UT Martin opens a four-game road swing this Thursday, Feb. 3 when it takes on OVC rival Eastern Illinois at 7:30 p.m.
