CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The 2023-24 season officially began for the University of Tennessee at Martin today as the Skyhawks were one of 12 teams competing at the Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff at Dalhousie Golf Club.
Only three squads were able to complete Round 2 today as heavy storms moved into the southeast Missouri area late in the afternoon. Just one of UT Martin's five members of the scoring lineup finished out his second round while most golfers still had 1-2 holes remaining before rainfall paused today's action.
Through Round 1, the Skyhawk trio of Dax Isbell (four birdies, score of 1-under par on the front-nine), Luke Caldwell (two birdies, team-high 13 pars) and Jonathan Xoinis (all four birdies coming in a nine-hole stretch) were tied for the team lead with scores of 73 (+1). Ethan Ray followed closely behind with a 75 (+3) with a team-best five birdies while freshman Grant Phillips carded a 76 (+4) with three birdies (all occurring in a five-hole stretch on the back-nine) in his collegiate debut.
On a crowded team leaderboard, UT Martin was ninth with a 294 (+6) which was only four strokes away from the upper-half of the standings. LSU led the stacked field after 18 holes with a score of 283 (-5) while only 15 of the 72 golfers shot under par this morning (led by LSU's Alex Price with a 65).
The second round will resume tomorrow at 7:45 a.m. as Caldwell and Xoinis are on Hole No. 9, Isbell is on Hole No. 8 and Ray has two holes left (No. 7 and No. 8). Round 3 will start at 8:30 a.m. off the No. 1 and No. 10 tee boxes.
