BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Ethan Ray produced a remarkable round at the Mountaineer Invitational this morning as the University of Tennessee at Martin redshirt sophomore generated the third-best score in the stacked field of 80 golfers.
A Collierville, Tenn. native, Ray carded an even-par 72 in Round 1, which trailed only St. John's Peicheng Chen and No. 20 Oklahoma State's Jonas Baumgartner by one stroke for the individual lead. Ray's morning scorecard included one birdie and 16 pars as he mastered the Pete Dye Golf Club.
Jacob Uehlein was the next highest Skyhawk in the individual standings as his 78 included one birdie. Jonathan Xoinis (84, one birdie) and Bryson Morrell (87, one birdie) completed the team scoring today for UT Martin. Playing as an individual, Luke Caldwell shot an 85 during the morning round.
As a team, the Skyhawks shot a 321 (+33) in Round 1 as Oklahoma State (301, +13) led the way through 18 holes. Only four of the 13 teams were able to complete the second round as play was suspended due to darkness around 8 p.m. local time.
A resumption of Round 2 will start at 8 a.m. CT tomorrow with the third and final round to follow immediately thereafter. UT Martin will be paired alongside William & Mary and St. John's for the final 18 holes.
