OLD HICKORY, Tenn. – After 36 holes at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate, the University of Tennessee at Martin ranks first out of 15 teams competing in the two-day tournament held at Hermitage Golf Course President's Reserve.
The Skyhawks shot an even-par 284 during this morning's first round before posting a 281 (-3) during the afternoon session, which was tied for the best round by any team on the day. Overall, UT Martin's 565 (-3) ranks first in the field in a tight top-four that includes Longwood (566, -2), Evansville (567, -1) and Belmont (567, -1).
"I am proud of the effort and patience our guys showed out there today," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "Conditions were favorable for scoring and fortunately, we capitalized on most of our opportunities. We have a chance to win tomorrow but our gameplan won't change – I'm excited to see how we embrace that challenge."
Dax Isbell currently ranks fifth in the 90-man field with an overall score of 139 (-3). That came after a 72 in Round 1 and a career-best 67 this afternoon. The freshman from Cumming, Ga. leads the whole tournament in par-5 scoring (4.50, -3) while also ranking in the top-10 in the event in birdies (8, third) and par-4 scoring (3.91, -2, eighth).
The UT Martin duo of Cayden Chambers and Luke Caldwell are each tied for 12th place individually after carding 141's (-1) today. Chambers managed a career-best 70 in the opening round and followed that with a 71 as his 27 pars rank 10th in the field. Caldwell was responsible for a team-best (and career-low) 69 in Round 1 before tallying a 72 during the afternoon, tapping in seven birdies while leading the entire tournament in par-3 scoring (2.88, -1).
Ethan Ray (144, +2) began his day with a 73 before generating an even-par 71 in the second round, knocking in six birdies while ranking 25th on the leaderboard.
The remaining member of the Skyhawk lineup was Garrett Chumley, whose scores of 75-74 equaled out to a 149 (+7). Shooting identical scores today was Jackson Twerdahl (75-74; 149, +7), who is competing as an individual.
"I'm extremely proud of Dax," Swafford said. "He stayed patient and didn't press after the morning round. It was only a matter of time before a low round came his way. I'm proud of all of all our guys – they battled all day and that's all I can ask for."
Round 3 is set for 8 a.m. tomorrow as UT Martin will chase its second tournament championship of the 2022-23 campaign.
