SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team shaved seven strokes off its first-round score today, shooting even par during Day 2 of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee Tech.
The Skyhawks moved up one spot in the team standings and are now just two strokes away from third place on the leaderboard. UT Martin's 288 today was the second-best score of the day (behind only leader Carson-Newman's 286) as the Skyhawks have put together a two-round total of 583 (+7). Through 36 holes, UT Martin tops the tournament in par-3 scoring (3.00, E) while its 119 pars are one shy of the event lead.
Leading the way for the Skyhawks today was senior Jacob Uehlein, who posted four birdies and 14 pars today for a 68 (-4) – the second-best Round 2 score in the 90-man field.
Luke Caldwell was UT Martin's next-best finisher today as he sank four birdies on the way to an even-par 72. Jonathan Xoinis (three birdies, 12 pars) and Dax Isbell (two birdies, 12 pars) collected identical scores of 74 (+2) to complete the team scoring in Round 2.
Bryson Morrell was the final member of the Skyhawks' scoring lineup as he managed an 82 on the day.
For the tournament, Uehlein's 141 (-3) ranks sixth in the field. The Tullahoma, Tenn. native ranks third in the tournament in par-3 scoring (2.75, -2) and seventh in par-5 scoring (4.63, -3) while generating the most birdies (seven) on the squad.
Caldwell's strong performance today leapt him 19 spots up to 19th in the individual standings with a 146 (+2). He is tied with Uehlein for the best par-4 scoring average (4.10, +2) on the team. Isbell is inside the top-25 with a 147 (+3) while Xoinis has managed a team-high 26 pars on the way to a 151 (+7). Morell has tallied a 157 (+13) with 18 holes remaining.
The third and final round is set for tomorrow as UT Martin will be paired up with Walters State and Southern Indiana. The Skyhawks will tee off on Holes No. 4-7 as part of a 9:30 a.m. CT shotgun start.
