ORLANDO, Fla. – The first of three days at the Mickey Mouse Intercollegiate is in the books as the University of Tennessee at Martin is sitting near the middle of the pack after 18 holes at Disney's Palm Golf Course.
The Skyhawks posted a 294 (+6) today, which is tied for ninth in the 16-team standings. Wofford (285, -3) was the only team to shoot under par in Round 1 as UT Martin is a mere three strokes out of fifth place. As a team, the Skyhawks generated 56 pars and 13 birdies today on the par-72, 6,870-yard course.
"I'm really pleased with our effort today," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "We need to do the little things better tomorrow and capitalize on our opportunities. We gave away four to six shots today with simple mistakes – these guys are close to posting the scores they want to but they have to let it happen. They're trying to force it right now and it's holding us back."
Earning his first collegiate start was freshman Luke Caldwell, who tied for the team lead with a 73 (+1) today. The Cookeville, Tenn. native began his day with seven consecutive pars and wrapped up his round by shooting 2-under over the final eight holes thanks to a pair of birdies.
Jacob Uehlein joined Caldwell at the top of the Skyhawk leaderboard with a 73 (+1). He started off with a pair of birdies in the first four holes and tacked on two more red scores on the last five holes.
Jonathan Xoinis and Bryson Morrell wrapped up the team scoring with identical scores of 74 (+2). Xoinis sank one early birdie and was at even-par through 14 holes before settling for a 74. Morrell managed three birdies on the front-nine alone before completing his day with a 1-under score on the last six holes.
The fifth member of UT Martin's scoring lineup was Dax Isbell as the freshman from Cumming, Ga. posted two birdies and sat at 1-over through 10 holes before tallying an 80 (+8).
Uehlein and Morrell share the team lead with four birdies apiece while Caldwell and Xoinis rank third in the entire tournament with 14 pars each. The trio of Uehlein, Xoinis and Morrell each boasted a team-best 3.25 par-3 scoring average (+1) while Caldwell/Uehlein/Morrell all led the Skyhawks with a 4.10 par-4 scoring average (+1). Caldwell and Xoinis topped the squad in par-5 scoring average (4.50, -2).
Round 2 of the 54-hole event takes place tomorrow as UT Martin is paired up alongside Ohio, Belmont and Indianapolis. The Skyhawks will tee off on Hole No. 1 as Isbell will start things off at 6:30 a.m. CST, followed by Morrell (6:40), Xoinis (6:50), Caldwell (7:00) and Uehlein (7:10).
