MIMS, Fla. – All six University of Tennessee at Martin golfers compiled at least one individual head-to-head victory today on Day 1 of the Carpenter/Chaney Classic held at Indian River Preserve Golf Club.
The Skyhawks were in a tight battle this morning, falling 4-2 to Bellarmine before rebounding for a commanding 5.5-0.5 victory over Eastern Illinois during the afternoon session.
Individually, Cayden Chambers led the way with an unblemished 2-0 record today. Jonathan Xoinis was also unbeaten (one victory, one halved) on the day for UT Martin, who is playing in their second straight match-play event of the season.
During the matchup against Bellarmine, Xoinis won seven holes en route to a dominant 4&3 victory. Chambers came through for a dramatic 1Up victory as he won three consecutive holes to close out the round and come out on top.
Bryson Morrell made a late surge during his matchup before falling 2&1. Dax Isbell was 1Up through 10 holes before a tight finish didn't go his way in a 3&2 setback. Jacob Uehlein won one hole and tied seven others but fell 4&3 while Ethan Ray was defeated by a 5&4 margin.
For the most part, the Skyhawks made short work of Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Illinois in the second match of the day. Chambers won five of the first seven holes and never looked back, posting a convincing 7&6 win. Isbell tallied wins on eight holes on the way to a 7&5 triumph. Ray carried a 5Up score into his back-nine before finishing up with a 6&5 victory.
Uehlein came through in the clutch with six wins over his last eight holes to earn a 4&3 win. Morrell tied his head-to-head competitor on eight separate holes – including five of the final seven holes – before emerging victorious for a 1Up victory. Xoinis was deadlocked in a close call before winning the 18th hole for an all-square result.
UT Martin rounds out the tournament tomorrow against OVC rival Tennessee Tech. The Skyhawks will tee off Hole No. 1 in seven-minute intervals beginning at 9:18 a.m. CST.
