MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball coach Kevin McMillan has announced the commitments of a pair of athletes on the first day of the early signing period, adding Taylor Scohy (Bellbrook, Ohio) and Yar Tong (Calgary, Alberta) to the team's Class of 2024.
"We think this is the start of a really good class," McMillan said. "We need kids that can rebound and both of these kids can fill that need. Taylor is a rebounding guard that can play inside and isn't afraid to get after it. Yar is 6-3 and is a super versatile player that can play inside or outside while being really athletic. I think those two will really help with some of the things that we will need and are excited to welcome them to our Skyhawk family."
Taylor Scohy | G | 5-9 | Fr. | Bellbrook, Ohio (Bellbrook HS)
Scohy joins the Skyhawks after prepping at Bellbrook High School. She is coming off a junior campaign in which she was named to the All-Ohio Division I third team after averaging 16.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.6 assists per game. She also garnered SWBL East Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons as a sophomore and junior while shooting 61 percent from the floor. During a decorated freshman campaign, she snagged SWBL and All-Southwest D1 honorable mention honors along being tabbed the team's defensive MVP.
Yar Tong | G/F | 6-3 | Fr. | Calgary, Alberta (Edge Prep)
With some international flare, Tong signed to become a Skyhawk from Edge Prep in Calgary, Alberta (Canada). She is coming off a season in which she averaged 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists and was named to the Canada West Top 50 Futures prospect list. Other accolades include being selected to the 2023 Alberta 17U Girls Team and accepting an invite to train at the NextGen national team training camp as part of the 2023 NCAA College Basketball Academy. Individual awards including being tabbed the 2022 Shooting Stars Showcase AAAA Rookie of the Year honor while at Father Lacombe.
