MADISON, Ill. – Facing gusty winds that consistently reached up to 25 miles per hour today, the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team posted a six-shot improvement in Round 2 at the SIUE Dolenc Invitational held at Gateway National.
The Skyhawks currently rank seventh in the 16-team field with a 590 (+22) but are just four shots away from third place in the standings. Despite the aforementioned tough conditions, UT Martin ranks second in the field in birdies (30) and par-3 scoring (3.24, +12) through 36 holes. Idaho and Weber State share the team lead with matching scores of 576 (+8) heading into tomorrow's final round.
Jacob Uehlein navigated the course at a high level today as his even-par 142 ranks fourth in the field of 96 golfers. The senior out of Tullahoma, Tenn. delivered a career-best 68 during the morning session, posting four of his six birdies on the back-nine. He followed that with three more birdies as part of a 74 in Round 2. Overall, he ranks second in the tournament in birdies (nine), second in par-3 scoring (3.00, E) and just outside the top-10 in par-4 scoring (team-best 4.06, +1).
As a team, the Skyhawks carded a 298 (+14) to start the day off. In addition to Uehlein's 68, that score included a pair of 76's from Ethan Ray (three birdies) and Cayden Chambers (two birdies). Jonathan Xoinis' 78 included one birdie as he closed out the team scoring.
UT Martin's Round 2 score was a 292 (+8), guided by a team-best five birdies from Ray (72). Xoinis tapped in two birdies while tying Ray for the best score on the squad with a 72 while Uehlein and Bryson Morrell concluded the team scoring with 74's. Each of the latter Skyhawks secured three birdies apiece as Morrell whittled seven strokes off his Round 1 tally. Chambers tapped in four birdies while improving his Round 1 performance by a shot but unfortunately his 75 was not a countable score.
Ray's two-round score of 148 (+6) ranks 27th in the field. Xoinis has registered a 150 (+8) and is followed in the UT Martin scoring lineup by Chambers (151, +9) and Morrell (155, +13). Xoinis tops the tournament with 25 pars while recording a team-best score of 4.75 (-2) on par-5 holes.
Playing as an individual, Garrett Chumley shot a 153 (+11) on the day. The sophomore from Murfreesboro, Tenn. managed one birdie during each round, accounting for a 77 this morning before a 76 in the afternoon.
"We have to do the simple things better and minimize mistakes," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "Little things make a difference and we have to correct those. I'm extremely proud of Jacob for his two rounds in these conditions. Last year, his second round would've been four to six strokes worse. So to see him hang around and post a solid score after a tough start was awesome. I look for him to play well again tomorrow."
The UT Martin scoring lineup will tee off alongside New Orleans, Southern Illinois and SIUE on Holes No. 4-7 during Round 3 while Chumley will hit off the No. 18 teebox. All action begins at 8:15 a.m.
