JACKSON, Tenn. – The first two rounds of the 2022 Grover Page Classic provided plenty of excitement for the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team, who collected five eagles and 31 birdies through 36 holes at Jackson Country Club.
The Skyhawks rank third in the mighty 16-team field, shooting under par for both rounds today. UT Martin shot a 287 (-1) this morning before carding a 282 (-6) in Round 2 for an aggregate score of 569 (-7), trailing only North Alabama (562, -14) and Tennessee Tech (567, -9). Their five eagles were tied for the most in the event while the Skyhawks ranked second in the tournament in both par-3 scoring (3.13, +5) and par-5 scoring (4.48, -21).
"I am super proud of the team," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "Obviously it's nice to come home and play a course that we're very familiar with – you could immediately tell that the guys were more comfortable versus last week. If you would have told me that we'd be 7-under par before we played 36 holes, I would have said I'd take it 100 percent of the time. This is one of the best if not the best fields we've had for this event and the scores reflect that – you're going to have to play well to win. The guys fought hard all 36 holes and compared to last week, we did the simple things better and that's what we focused on."
Individually, Bryson Morrell is in contention for top individual honors as the senior out of Knoxville, Tenn. is second in the field with a 138 (-6), just two strokes behind Tennessee Tech's Jackson Skeen. Morrell leads the tournament in eagles (two) while ranking third in par-4 scoring (3.90, -2) and fourth in par-4 scoring (2.88, -1).
Jacob Uehlein ranks 10th in the individual standings after a 142 (-2) on Day 1 of the event. Cayden Chambers (143, -1) is also under par through 36 holes, thanks in large part to a 4.25 scoring performance (-6) on par-5 opportunities which ranks him sixth in the field. Ethan Ray's 146 (+2) and Jonathan Xoinis' 147 (+3) round out the Skyhawks' scoring lineup.
UT Martin also has five individuals represented in the 96-man field, led by Garrett Chumley's 143 (-1) in his season debut. The sophomore out of Murfreesboro, Tenn. guided the Skyhawks with eight birdies on the day. Dax Isbell (148, +4), Rocco Zakutney (149, +5), Luke Caldwell (150, +6, tournament-best 29 pars) and Jackson Twerdahl (152, +8) also partook in UT Martin's solid play today.
