INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Tennessee at Martin will take part in the Norman (Okla.) Regional on May 16-18 as the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee unveiled its 2022 tournament field today live on the Golf Channel.
The Skyhawks are one of 13 teams who will head to the Norman Regional, which will be hosted by the University of Oklahoma. The Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club will host Oklahoma, Texas, Auburn, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Louisville, Missouri, San Diego State, Utah, Kent State, Kansas State, UT Martin and Rider and also individuals from Baylor, Belmont, Chattanooga, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee and North Texas.
The top five teams in the standings and the low individual not from those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, held at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. from May 27 through June 1.
Designed by Perry Maxwell on land that once served as a Navy Air Technical Training Center, the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club was built in 1951. With its rolling hills, native grasses and majestic Bur Oaks providing a picturesque background, the club has hosted five NCAA Regionals in the last decade and is a par-72 course playing at 7,452 yards.
One week ago today, the Skyhawks produced their third Ohio Valley Conference championship in school history (all since 2016). UT Martin ranked second in the team standings through 54 holes of stroke play, qualifying for the match play semifinals. The Skyhawks then defeated Morehead State 3-2 before turning away Tennessee Tech by a 3-2 margin in the finals – giving Austin Swafford his second championship ring in two years as a head coach.
On the season, UT Martin has displayed incredible balance as its five members of the scoring lineup are separated by only 1.1 strokes in terms of scoring average. Two-time All-OVC honoree Tate Chumley (73.6) recorded his third top-five finish of the season at the OVC Championships before going 2-0 in match play – clinching the team win on both occasions. Jacob Uehlein boasts a 73.9 stroke average and leads the team with seven top-20 finishes. All-OVC Newcomer Garrett Chumley is responsible for a 74.5 scoring average and the lowest round of the season (67) by any Skyhawk. All-OVC performer Bryson Morrell accounts for a 74.6 stroke average while topping the squad in par-3 scoring (3.19) and par-5 scoring (4.83). Jonathan Xoinis' 74.7 scoring average follows closely behind as the All-OVC Newcomer has compiled 80 birdies and three eagles in 2021-22.
