CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Golf Championships began today as the University of Tennessee at Martin produced the second-best Round 1 score out of nine teams in the field.
The Skyhawks produced a 299 (+11) in extremely windy conditions today at Dalhousie Golf Club. That score ranks just three shots behind Round 1 leader Tennessee Tech (296, +8) as just seven shots separate second place through seventh place in an extremely tight leaderboard.
UT Martin led the event in par-4 scoring (4.32, +16), par-5 scoring (4.65, -7) and eagles (two of the four in the entire field) while ranking second in the tournament with 16 birdies in Round 1.
"The conditions were tough," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "The wind was really blowing all day and made things difficult – the scores reflect that. Overall, sitting in the position that we are after Round 1, we'll take it. We have a few things to work on – mainly improving our course management a little bit – but I am pleased with our team's effort today."

Jacob Uehlein guided UT Martin today as his 73 (+1) ranks seventh in the field of 45 golfers. The junior from Tullahoma, Tenn. performed especially well down the stretch, shooting three-under par over his final 13 holes. He carded three birdies and an eagle (marking a 3 on the par-5, 526-yard Hole No. 15).
All-OVC honoree Bryson Morrell ranks 10th on the individual leaderboard with a 74 (+2). The junior out of Knoxville, Tenn. leads all players in the tournament with a 4.25 par-5 scoring average (-3) while tapping in four birdies.
Trailing closely behind is Jonathan Xoinis (75, +3), who is 15th in the field through Round 1. The All-OVC Newcomer from Chattanooga, Tenn. ranks sixth in the field in par-4 scoring (4.10, +1) – thanks in large part to an eagle on the par-4, 295-yard Hole No. 6. The redshirt freshman also added a pair of birdies.
The Skyhawks' final counter was All-OVC Newcomer Garrett Chumley (77, +5). The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native managed a team-best five birdies – ranking third in the field – and ranks 19th in the player standings.
Tate Chumley (78, +6) performed rather well throughout the day but was hampered by a pair of triple bogeys. He ranks second in the tournament with 12 pars and fifth in par-3 scoring (3.00, E) – coming in 21st on the individual leaderboard.
UT Martin will be paired alongside Tennessee Tech and SIUE for Round 2 tomorrow. Tate Chumley will start things off at Hole No. 1 at 9:40 a.m., followed by Garrett Chumley (9:50), Xoinis (10:00), Morrell (10:10) and Uehlein (10:20).
