SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Heavy rain hit the area during the second round today at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate in the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team's first official action in three weeks.
The Skyhawks shot a 300 (+16) in Round 1 but were in the process of a much-improved round this afternoon, carding a 1-under par score as a team just a little over one-third of the way in. However, thunderstorms arrived around 3:45 p.m. and suspended play for the remainder of the day.
Jacob Uehlein accounted for a team-best four birdies on the way to a 74 (+3) that led UT Martin this morning. Tate Chumley (three birdies) and Bryson Morrell (two birdies) followed closely behind with 75's while the Skyhawk score was completed by Jonathan Xoinis (76, two birdies). Garrett Chumley managed a 79 and a pair of birdies as the fifth member of the squad's lineup.
To start Round 2, Tate Chumley tapped in a pair of birdies to sit 2-under through seven holes. Morrell had one birdie and was responsible for a score of 1-under in six holes. Uehlein (E) began his round with six consecutive pars while Xoinis (one birdie) and Garrett Chumley (six pars) were each 1-over through seven holes.
Collectively, Uehlein paced UT Martin in par-3 scoring (3.00, E) on the day while Tate Chumley topped the squad in par-4 scoring (3.94, +1) and birdies (five). Morrell led the way in par-5 scoring (4.50, -3) and pars (14), sharing the team lead in the latter category with Garrett Chumley.
Competing individually, Jackson Twerdahl made one birdie in Round 1, ending with a 78. The freshman out of Nolensville, Tenn. was six holes into the afternoon before the round was halted.
As a result of today's suspension, the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate will be shortened to a 36-hole event as Round 2 will resume tomorrow at 8 a.m. The Skyhawks are paired with Loyola-Chicago and North Alabama while Twerdahl will finish out in a group that includes players from Western Illinois and Northern Iowa.
