BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. – The sibling duo of Tate Chumley and Garrett Chumley guided the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team today as the Skyhawks took part in the first two rounds of the Gulf Coast Collegiate, hosted by the University of New Orleans.
Older brother Tate posted scores of 76 during Round 1 and 74 in Round 2 while younger brother Garrett carded a 72 this morning and a 78 during the afternoon session. The Chumleys rank in a tie for 19th place in the 75-man field with identical scores of 150 (+4) headed into tomorrow's third and final round.
The Diamondhead Country Club proved to be a challenging test today as all 13 teams in the field are at least 14-over par. UT Martin shot a 298 (+10) during Round 1 – the fourth-best score in the field – before posting a 304 (+16) in Round 2. Overall, the Skyhawks rank sixth with a 602 (+26) through 36 holes – a dozen shots behind current leader North Alabama (590, +14).
Garrett Chumley paced UT Martin this morning with an even-par 72 that included five birdies. Jacob Uehlein also rolled in five birdies in Round 1 – all coming in a five-hole span – as he and Cayden Chambers (three birdies) tied for the next best score with a 75. Tate Chumley collected a pair of birdies on the way to a 76 this morning to complete the team scoring while Bryson Morrell posted two birdies as part of a 79.
During the afternoon round, all three of Tate Chumley's birdies came on the front-nine as he was responsible for a team-best 74. Morrell delivered a countable tally of 75 after sinking a pair of birdies. Uehlein (77) and Garrett Chumley (78) each tapped in one birdie apiece to round out the Skyhawks' team scoring. Chambers' 84 in Round 2 included one birdie.
Competing as an individual, Jonathan Xoinis put together a pair of solid scores. He managed a 77 with two birdies during the opening round before shooting his final 11 holes of the day at 3-under par (three birdies) for a 75 in Round 2.
Collectively, Uehlein (152, +8) and Xoinis (152, +8) are both two shots back of the Chumleys for the team lead. Morrell follows with a 154 (+10) while Chambers has registered a 159 (+15).
Xoinis ranks seventh in the tournament in par-3 scoring (3.13, +1) while boasting team-best categories of par-5 scoring (5.00, E) and pars (22). Garrett Chumley and Bryson Morrell have equaled Xoinis for the team lead in par-5 scoring (5.00, E) while Garrett Chumley and Uehlein share the team lead with six birdies apiece.
