GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Bryson Morrell came up with a hole-in-one on his first swing of the day as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team completed its second day of the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club.
Morrell, whose 69 yesterday placed him ninth in the 110-man tournament field, carded his ace on the par-3, 205-yard Hole No. 8. In slightly chilly conditions, he used a 5-iron for a perfectly struck ball that started a little right of the hole and drew back in, landing about 25 feet shy of the hole before rolling straight into the cup. Not surprisingly, the hole-in-one has helped Morrell rank third in the event in par-3 scoring (3.00, E) through 36 holes as his ace was one of 12 total eagles by the field today.
The Skyhawks combined for 13 birdies and the aforementioned eagle today as all six players posted similar scores. Facing high winds that didn't pick up until midway through the round, Jacob Uehlein and Jonathan Xoinis each collected 75's to lead the way while Morrell and Garrett Chumley completed the team scoring with 76's.
Uehlein registered three birdies on the day and played the course's front nine at 1-under par. Xoinis was responsible for a team-best five birdies – four of which came on the back-nine. Participating in the tournament as an individual, Cayden Chambers posted one birdie – coming on the par-5, 525-yard Hole No. 14 which all six Skyhawks birdied on the day.
For the tournament, Morrell's 145 (+1) ranks as the best UT Martin score as the junior out of Knoxville, Tenn. is in 34th place on the player leaderboard. Chambers ranks second on thr squad with a 149 (+5) through 36 holes as he has collected eighth-most pars (25) in the event. Uehlein and Garrett Chumley have each accounted for scores of 150 (+6). Tate Chumley's two-round total is a 151 (+7) while Xoinis stands at a 153 (+9) after shaving three strokes off his Round 1 tally today.
The Skyhawks will conclude the spring-opening event tomorrow at 7:45 a.m. local time, teeing off on Holes No. 12 through 15.
