GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Junior Bryson Morrell paced the University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad today with an impressive round during the first day of the 54-hole Loyola Intercollegiate held at Palm Valley Golf Club.
Competing in the Skyhawk lineup for the first time since the TVA Community Credit Union Invitational on Oct. 18-19, Morrell showed no signs of rust. The Knoxville, Tenn. native tapped in a team-high five birdies (all coming in his final 13 holes) on the way to a 69 (-3), which is good enough for ninth place in the loaded 110-man tournament field. He ranks sixth in the event in par-4 scoring (3.80, -2) alongside his teammates Tate Chumley and Garrett Chumley.
As a team, UT Martin shot a 291 (+3) today, which ranks 10th in the 18-team field. The Skyhawks rank fourth in the tournament with 58 pars and sixth in par-4 scoring (4.00, E) – combining for 15 birdies and one eagle on Day 1 of the three-day event.
"It's a good feeling to have the first tournament round of the spring season under our belt," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "Today's round was close to being under par as a team and overall we handled ourselves well. I am extremely proud of Bryson and his play today. He's worked hard this offseason so it was encouraging to see him play well. I know he has more under-par rounds coming."
Tate Chumley's 73 (+1) was the next best Round 1 score for the Skyhawks as the senior tallied all of his four birdies during his first 10 holes. Garrett Chumley navigated his way through a 74 (+2) after posting three birdies plus an eagle on the par-4, 330-yard Hole No. 10. It was one of only nine total eagles during the opening round of the tournament.
UT Martin's scoring lineup was completed by Jacob Uehlein (75, +3), which included an even-par effort on the course's back-nine. He is tied with teammate Cayden Chambers for the ninth-most pars (13) in the field through 18 holes.
Jonathan Xoinis (78, +6) was the fifth member of the Skyhawk lineup as he ranks fifth in the tournament with 14 pars.
Performing on an individual basis, Chambers put together a quality round today with a 73 (+1). The freshman was bogey-free over his final 13 holes today, collecting 11 pars and two birdies during that stretch.
UT Martin will tee off at 7:45 a.m. local time on Holes No. 8-12 during tomorrow's second round. The Skyhawk scoring lineup is paired alongside Marshall, Holy Cross and DePaul while Chambers will play in a group that includes individuals from Seton Hall, South Dakota and DePaul.
