MARTIN, Tenn. – Signifying the first of a 19-match slate for the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis program this Sunday versus Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, the Skyhawks' full 2022 spring schedule has been unraveled by head coach Caitlyn Williams ahead of this weekend's affair with the Hilltoppers.
Off the back of a promising fall output that concluded with the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in Murfreesboro, Tenn. last October, coach Williams' squad hopes to make some noise in the busier portion of the schedule during the second semester, starting on Jan. 30 against WKU. Altogether, the Skyhawks will match up against 12 different non-conference opponents before OVC play begins on March 25.
Nine opposing conferences will be represented across UTM's first 12 appearances, facing two other institutions from C-USA after the season-opener with Western Kentucky, namely Middle Tennessee (Feb. 5) and UAB (Feb. 12), along with a Feb. 4 battle with Lipscomb sandwiched in between.
Visits to Samford (Feb. 13), Saint Louis (Feb. 25), and Chicago State (Feb. 26) will all occur before the Skyhawks have a chance at a home event themselves, also taking on NCAA Division II member Carson-Newman at a neutral court in Knoxville on Feb. 19. As a matter of fact, 10 of UT Martin's 12 non-conference dates with take place away from home, with the only two such hosting duties – vs. Missouri State and Chattanooga on March 4 and 6, respectively – preceding the final non-conference events of the spring against UNC-Asheville and College of Charleston on March 20 and 22.
Staying true to form over the majority of their non-conference slate, the Skyhawks' first two OVC meetings will be as visitors against SIUE and Eastern Illinois on back-to-back days during the final weekend of March. UTM will then bounce back and forth between home and away status throughout the last five Ohio Valley Conference matches, including a home contest with reigning league tournament champion Austin Peay on April 15.
Other home appearances for the navy and orange will be against Southeast Missouri (April 2) and Murray State (April 16), whereas the Skyhawks will travel to Belmont (April 8) and Tennessee State for the spring finale on April 23.
Officially the third season as the leader of the program, coach Williams' unit grabbed a total of 32 victories in singles and doubles play last fall, finishing the prerequisite portion of the schedule with four players scooping up four or more wins in one-on-one competition during five total events.
In addition, the tandems of Mizuki Sakurai/Sina Albersmeier, Jillian Niedzialowski/Lia Espinal, and Jule Streif/Ariadna Ondo grabbed a pair of wins each in doubles sets, helping the Skyhawks assume 10 two-on-two wins next to 22 singles triumphs.
Once the 19-match schedule comes to a close, the Ohio Valley Conference's postseason bracket will commence on April 29 from a neutral venue in Evansville, Indiana, wrapping up on the first day of May.
