
SKYHAWKS, GARRETT CHUMLEY BOTH ATOP LEADERBOARD AFTER TWO ROUNDS AT DEREK DOLENC INVITATIONAL

MADISON, Ill. – It was a highly successful Day 1 of the Derek Dolenc Invitational for the University of Tennessee at Martin golf program today as the Skyhawks are responsible for both the team and individual leaders through 36 holes at Gateway National.
UT Martin shot the best score of each of the first two rounds today, becoming the only school in the 14-team field to shoot under par this morning (281, -3). The Skyhawks followed that with a 285 (+1) this afternoon, resulting in a 566 (-2) that is seven strokes better than second-place Weber State (573, +5).
"I'm really impressed with how we responded today after last week," second-year UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "We stuck to our gameplan and fortunately were able to capitalize on some opportunities. We've got a few areas to improve on going into the final round tomorrow but I am very pleased with our effort today."
Topping the individual leaderboard is Garrett Chumley as the true freshman out of Murfreesboro, Tenn. was unfazed in his second career tournament. He shot a 67 (-4) to nab a first-round lead and followed that with a 70 (-1) in Round 2, leading the 90-man field by two shots with a cumulative 137 (-5). He leads the tournament in par-3 scoring (2.80, -2) and par-4 scoring (3.94, -1) while boasting the team lead in pars (29) and birdies (six).
"I am thrilled for Garrett," Swafford said. "He played with poise and confidence all day. He's worked hard since he got on campus six weeks ago and it showed today."
Garrett Chumley's opening-round 67 included four birdies and 14 pars as a trio of those birdies came on the course's back-nine. Jacob Uehlein made his season debut for the Skyhawks today and fired a 69 this morning, carding four of his five birdies over his final eight holes. Bryson Morrell tapped in three birdies on his way to an even-par 71 while Tate Chumley's 74 that included a pair of birdies to round out UT Martin's team scoring during Round 1.
Jonathan Xoinis, who shot a 77 in the first round, accounted for the second-best score in Round 2 with a 69. The redshirt freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn. shot 5-under in his last eight holes – including the Skyhawks' lone eagle of the day on the par-5, 545-yard Hole No. 18.
Garrett Chumley's afternoon tally of 70 included a pair of birdies and 15 pars. Morrell and Tate Chumley were both responsible for one birdie and 14 pars to complete UT Martin's team scoring with 73's. Uehlein – who was tied for third place after today's morning session – managed one birdie during a second-round 82.
Overall, Morrell's 144 (+2) ranks 14th in the field while Xoinis (146, +4) is in 18th place in the individual standings after leading the squad in par-5 scoring (4.63, -3). Tate Chumley (147, +5) is just outside the top-20 and Cayden Chambers – who competed as an individual – posted back-to-back 74's and enters Round 3 with an aggregate score of 148 (+6). Uehlein's two-round total came out to 151 (+9) as he equaled Garrett Chumley for the most birdies (six) on the squad.
As a team, the Skyhawks led the tournament with 122 pars and tied for the team lead in par-4 scoring (4.12, +11) today. UT Martin also tacked on 24 birdies – 13 of which came in the afternoon session.
The Skyhawks will look for their first victory of the 2021-22 campaign tomorrow as Round 3 begins with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start. UT Martin will be paired alongside Weber State and Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay for the final 18 holes.
