MARTIN, Tenn. – Competing in the first of what will become a five-date fall agenda on Saturday afternoon from their home court, the University of Tennessee at Martin Tennis squad matched up with Southeastern Conference foe Missouri in a pair of exhibition duels, kicking off a stretch of three straight weekends where the Skyhawks will continue to prep themselves for a lengthier spring schedule next semester.
Ultimately, the Tigers made short work of UTM in the two-parter as the temperature heated up throughout the day, downing the Skyhawks 7-0 and 5-0 respectively. Third-year head coach Caitlyn Williams revealed the same three pairings for doubles competition in each bout, playing Amelia Campbell with Jule Streif, Mizuki Sakurai with Sina Albersmeier, and Jillian Niedzialowski alongside Ariadna Ondo.
In the end, those doubles matchups teetered heavily in Missouri's favor, leading to a total discrepancy of 18-7 across the opener next to a 14-4 unfinished final in the second bout, despite Albersmeier and Sakurai's 4-2 advantage in the third set that was ended prematurely.
As was the case in doubles play during the first match of the morning, the six singles sessions all drifted in favor of the visitors throughout part one, as Bronte Murgett, Ellie Wright, Gabriela Martinez, Marta Oliveira, Romary Cardenas Rifka, and Valentina Vazquez Pongruber all picked up individual victories in 2-0 order. The Skyhawks gave the Tigers some complications in the second series of singles matches, although two unfinished meetings – one from Albersmeier pushing hard for a third set versus Cardenas Rifka – left UT Martin without an official individual win in four attempts.
Back-to-back two-day weekend events await Coach Williams' group to close out the month of September, firstly traveling to Clarksville, Tenn. for the Austin Peay Fall Tournament next Friday and Saturday hosted by UTM's fellow Ohio Valley Conference member. The following week sets up a second road outing from North Alabama in Florence, another multi-team tournament that the Skyhawks will set their sights on.
