MARTIN, Tenn. – Lia Espinal, who attended Cathedral International School in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has committed to join the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis program.
The first signee for the upcoming 2021-22 campaign, Espinal will bring a wealth of experience to the Skyhawks as a freshman. She is a current member of the Dominican Republic's team in the Billie Jean King Cup, which is the world's largest annual women's international team sports competition.
"I am very excited to welcome Lia to Skyhawk Nation," UT Martin head coach Caitlyn Williams said. "Her years of high-level tennis competition and junior playing experience will prove valuable on our already seasoned team. We are all looking forward to greeting Lia and getting back to work in the fall."
Playing out of the No. 1 slot on her youth teams since she was 10 years old, Espinal has represented the Dominican Republic in prestigious tournaments like the U12, JITIC, WJTC and Fed Cup Juniors. She has boasted top-three finishes in each of the aforementioned events, including a doubles victory and a semifinalist singles performance in the 2017 JITIC tournament.
In addition, Espinal was the runner-up in doubles of the Copa Mangu ITF tournament in 2019 and a two-time semifinalist in doubles at the same Copa Mangu event in 2017 and 2020. She placed in the doubles semifinals in back-to-back years (2019-20) in the Copa Mangulina tournament and was a semifinalist in doubles at the 2018 Copa El Salvador event.
Espinal is a three-time singles quarterfinalist at the Copa Mangu tournament (2017, 2019, 2020) and also generated quarterfinalist efforts at the 2018 and 2019 Copa Merengue event in doubles as well as the 2020 Copa Los Tres Ojos doubles tournament.
