MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Round 1 of the 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Golf Championships is in the books as the University of Tennessee at Martin put on a good showing today at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
As a team, the Skyhawks are sitting in fourth in a congested top of the leaderboard as first through fourth places are separated by a single stroke each. UT Martin shot a 286 (-2), which only trails SIUE (283, -5), Belmont (284, -4) and Tennessee Tech (285, -3) through 18 holes of play.
The Skyhawks led the tournament in par-5 scoring (4.60, -8) while their 19 birdies are the second-most out of 11 teams in the field.
"I was really proud of our effort today," said UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford, who was named the 2021 OVC Coach of the Year last night. "The guys played steady and stuck to our strategy. We are in a great spot after Round 1. We have to improve a couple areas tomorrow but are excited for Round 2."

Jack Story led the way for the Skyhawks as the Dickson, Tenn. native is tied with Morehead State's Joe Muschong and SIUE's Zakariya Butt at the top of the 55-man standings. The senior lefty shot a 68 (-4) that included a team-high six birdies (second-highest tally in the tournament) – four of which came in the first six holes. The back-to-back All-OVC performer did most of his damage in par-4 scoring as his 3.60 average (-4) tops the event in that category.
Tapping in a team-best 13 pars today was Tate Chumley, who sank three birdie putts on his way to a 71 (-1). The 2021 All-OVC honoree ranks ninth in the individual standings as all of his birdies came during a nine-hole stretch midway through his day.
Ross Redmont leads the tournament in par-5 scoring (4.25, -3), helping the redshirt senior out of Memphis, Tenn. shoot a 73 (+1). His round included four birdies – including three on the front-nine.
The final scorer in the Skyhawk lineup was sophomore Jacob Uehlein as he carded a 74 (+2). The Tullahoma, Tenn. native produced a team-high 2.75 par-3 scoring average (-1) during Round 1 and rolled in a trio of birdies.
Three-time All-OVC honoree Nick Wolf additionally registered three birdies on the day but one tough hole (a quadruple bogey on the par-3, 178-yard Hole No. 13) unfairly inflated his final score (77, +5).
UT Martin will be paired alongside Jacksonville State and Morehead State for tomorrow's Round 2. Wolf will start the Skyhawks' day at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by Uehlein (9:40), Redmont (9:50), Chumley (10:00) and Story (10:10) on Hole No. 1.
