
SKYHAWK SOCCER BATTLES BUT FALLS 2-0 IN OVC CHAMPIONSHIP SEMIFINALS AGAINST SIUE

MURRAY, Ky. – The 2020-21 University of Tennessee at Martin soccer season came to a close today in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship semifinals as the Skyhawks fell to No. 2 seed SIUE by a 2-0 margin at Cutchin Field. UT Martin wraps up the abbreviated spring season with a 6-4-1 overall record.
The Skyhawks doubled up the Cougars in the shot column (16-8) and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. However, SIUE (7-2-2) struck for a goal just 64 seconds into the match and added a second goal in the 62nd minute to advance to Saturday's finals against No. 4 seed Southeast Missouri.

Jill Hildreth nearly outshot the Cougars by herself as the Germantown, Tenn. native tallied match-highs of seven shots and three shots on goal. Emely van der Vliet added four shot attempts (two on goal) while Jaden Hildreth, Lotte Koot and Catey Hunt each fired a shot on goal this afternoon.
In goal, Erica Myers made three saves today in all 90 minutes. Maria Castaldo, Kamryn Chappell and Jacalyn Schubring each logged the full 90 minutes on the defensive back line for UT Martin.
The first shot of the contest was true as OVC Forward of the Year MacKenzie Litzsinger found the back of the net.
The Skyhawks accounted for the next eight shots of the match. Jill Hildreth (sixth minute, 15th minute, 17th minute), van der Vliet (ninth minute), Koot (13th minute) each peppered SIUE goalkeeper Taylor Spiller with shots on goal early but she successfully made a save on each attempt.
Myers made a save in the 44th minute to keep the score at 1-0 at the intermission. UT Martin outshot the Cougars by a 10-3 margin in the first 45 minutes of action, led by Jill Hildreth's five attempts.
Myers was there for another save just 4:16 into the second stanza but SIUE collected a goal at the 61:02 mark as Lily Schnieders scored a goal on Maria Haro's second assist of the match.
The Skyhawks' first shot on goal of the second period came off the foot of Hunt in the 72nd minute. Myers made her final save of the day a little under four minutes later, keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Jaden Hildreth had a good look at a scoring opportunity in the 79th minute but Spiller was once again there for the save.
UT Martin continued to apply pressure late but Van der Vliet's shot attempt in the 86th minute also fell into the hands of Spiller. Unfortunately, that would be the Skyhawks' final shot on goal of the match.
