TEMPE, Ariz. – Jillian Niedzialowski made history this afternoon as the University of Tennessee at Martin sophomore was spotlighted as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Universal Tennis Rating Division I National Player of the Week.
Niedzialowski becomes the first player in Ohio Valley Conference history to nab the accolade and is just the 19th all-time recipient of the award. She joins previous winners from schools such as Arkansas, FIU, James Madison, Louisville, North Carolina (three honorees), Notre Dame, Ohio State, South Carolina, TCU, UAB, UCF, USC, Virginia, Washington (two honorees) and West Virginia.
The governing body of college tennis, the ITA first implemented the UTR National Player of the Week program in October 2019. The UTR is the global gold standard for all tennis players which reflects their current skill level based on actual performance and is used by college coaches for evaluating player ability, seeding, selection and more.
A Buffalo, NY native, Niedzialowski was one of many heroes during the Skyhawks' 5-2 triumph over OVC rival Jacksonville State last Friday. After recently cracking UT Martin's lineup on March 29, she overpowered the opposition for her first wins of the season in both doubles and singles. In the process, she improved her UTR from 6.85 to 7.17.
Niedzialowski helped set the tone early as she teamed up with Ariadna Ondo for a 6-3 doubles win over Sara Jamal and Harriet Hamilton. The Skyhawks later went on to win the doubles point to claim the 1-0 advantage in the match.
After the visiting Gamecocks won the first two singles matchups to take a brief 2-1 lead, Niedzialowski was part of a UT Martin surge to conclude the match. Her 7-6 (5), 6-4 triumph at No. 6 over Balsen Kaya tilted the score back in favor of the Skyhawks at 3-2. UT Martin would go on to win the final two singles decisions for their first team victory of the season.
