LAKE OCONEE, Ga. – Nick Wolf and the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team each sit atop the leaderboard after a superb first two rounds at the National Intercollegiate, held at Reynolds Plantation Golf Course.
Wolf is currently first in the individual standings with a score of 133 (-11) through 36 holes, sitting five shots ahead of second place in the 75-man field. His day began with a solid 70 (-2) in the first round before unleashing nine birdies and nine pars in Round 2 for a nine-under 63. That ties current teammate Jack Story for the best single-round to-par score in the Skyhawks' Division I history (since 1992). His second round included five consecutive birdies on the back-nine as his 15 total birdies and par-4 scoring average (3.65, -7) lead the tournament.
As a team, the Skyhawks were the only team to shoot below par in both rounds – resulting in a 12-stroke lead going into the final round. UT Martin posted a 283 (-5) this morning before a five-shot improvement (278, -10) in the afternoon for a 561 (-15). That number leads both host Mercer and North Alabama (573, -3) in a strong 13-team field that includes six Ohio Valley Conference schools. Like Wolf, the Skyhawks currently top the event in birdies (39) and par-4 scoring (4.00, E).
"It was two great rounds for the team today," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "It took everyone and as a coach, you love to see that. We have work to do tomorrow - there are really good teams behind us so we have to focus on the task at hand."
Ross Redmont joined Wolf for the team lead after Round 1 as they each carded a 70 (-2). Three of Redmont's four birdies came on his front-nine while Tate Chumley's morning included two birdies, 15 pars and one bogey for a 71 (-1). Story's even-par 72 scorecard had three birdies on it to complete the Skyhawks' team scoring.
A birdie binge followed for UT Martin in Round 2, paced by Wolf's outstanding performance. Chumley came away with five birdies on the way to a 70 (-2) while Story sank six birdies before settling for a 71 (-1). Jacob Uehlein was the Skyhawks' fifth scorer for the afternoon session as he displayed a nine-shot improvement from Round 1. His 74 (+2) barely edged Redmont's 75 (+3) for the final countable score.
Competing as an individual, Peyton Dix additionally inked his fair share of red on the scorecard in Round 2. After shooting a 77 (+5) in the morning, the redshirt senior southpaw rolled in five birdies and ended with a season-best 70 (-2) over his last 18 holes.
In addition to Wolf, the UT Martin trio of Chumley (-3, fifth), Story (-1, 11th) and Redmont (+3, 16th) find themselves in the top-16 of the tournament standings. Dix is currently at +3 while Uehlein is +13 after the completion of two rounds.
Dix will get things started for the Skyhawks on Tuesday as he is set to tee off Hole No. 10 at 7:36 a.m. CST. Uehlein (8:30), Redmont (8:39), Story (8:48), Chumley (8:57) and Wolf (9:06) will all begin on Hole No. 1 as UT Martin looks to record its third tournament championship in four tries so far this season.
