MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin and Jacksonville State soccer teams went toe-to-toe in its final Ohio Valley Conference regular season matchup as league foes on Tuesday evening for 110 grueling minutes before time expired on a 1-1 tied at Skyhawk Field.
On an overcast and windy evening with gusts eclipsing 20 miles per hour today, both teams faced an unscoutable opponent on the pitch. While the elements were daunting, the Skyhawks (2-3-1) outshot the visiting Gamecocks (2-3-1) 17-13 on the afternoon – including by a sizable 13-4 advantage after halftime and through the two overtime periods.
Senior Alice Adams led all players with a game-high seven shot attempts – including her first goal of the season. Freshman Emily van der Vliet (three), Jill Hildreth (two) and Blare Gerido (two) also tallied multiple shot attempts in the contest.
Goalkeeper Erica Myers logged her sixth complete game of the season while tallying six saves and one goal allowed. Her six saves ranked as the second most this season while improving her save percentage to 78.6 percent. She was especially challenged early in the contest, tallying two saves in the 17th minute and five of her six in the first half.

While the game was scoreless for much of the contest, once the action got started, a lot happened in a short amount of time. In the 76th minute, Hendrikje Baurmann lofted a cross into the box and found Adams who placed a header past the diving keeper for her first goal of the season and the 12th of her career. The goal by Adams and assist by Baurmann (her third of the season) gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 advantage.
Following the goal, Jacksonville State made a pair of substitutions which made a big impact on the game – including the return of Gabriel Clarke following a quick breather. Just over a minute after returning to the field, Clarke found a rebounded shot attempt from Alicia Pallister which was saved and deflected off the diving hands of Myers and sank it into the back of the goal to tie the contest at 1-1 in the 77th minute.
UT Martin turned up the intensity over the final 13 minutes of regulation and both 10-minute overtime periods to control the tempo and possession. The Skyhawks would outshoot the Gamecocks 8-0 during the span – including placing two shots on goal – but could not find the game-winner.
The Skyhawks will hit the road for their next two contests beginning with a matchup at Tennessee Tech on Friday, March 26. Action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
