BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Cameron Holden, a junior forward at the University of Tennessee at Martin, received All-Ohio Valley Conference second team and OVC All-Newcomer honors as the league revealed its 2020-21 men's basketball postseason awards today.
The Forsyth, Ga. native becomes only the fourth player in school history to garner All-OVC second team and All-Newcomer accolades in the same year, joining Parker Stewart (2019-20), Deville Smith (2014-15) and Michael Hart (1994-95). Holden is the only player in the NCAA Division I men's basketball ranks to average at least 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game while sinking at least 100 free throws during the 2020-21 campaign.
Holden currently ranks in the top-20 nationally in offensive rebounding (4.0 per game, fifth), free throws attempted (146, 12th) and free throws made (106, 19th). He ended the regular season ranking fourth in the OVC in rebounding (8.3 per game), sixth in steals (1.7 per contest) and 10th in scoring (14.9 points per game). Against OVC opposition, he upped his production to 15.1 points per contest (eighth), 8.9 rebounds per outing (third) and 1.9 steals per game (fourth).
Playing in 21 games and starting in 12, Holden also ranked second on the UT Martin squad in assists (2.0) and minutes played (27.3) per game.
All six of Holden's double-doubles in 2020-21 occurred during league play, trailing only OVC Player of the Year Terry Taylor from Austin Peay (15) and All-OVC first teamer Johni Broome from Morehead State (eight) in that category. He became the first player in Skyhawk history to pile up a double-double in each of his first two OVC games. His 20-point and 16-rebound performance against Murray State on Jan. 16 included 11 offensive boards – which are the third-most in a game by any NCAA Division I player this season. He later accumulated a career-high 18 rebounds as part of a double-double against Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 18.
Holden reached the 20-point plateau on seven different occasions, including a career-best 27 points in the season finale at Eastern Illinois on Feb. 27. The 6-5, 200-pounder went 15-of-17 from the free throw line on Dec. 15 against Bethel, as his 15 makes were just two shy of the school record (and the most by any Skyhawk since 2011).
Crowned as the OVC's Newcomer of the Week on Feb. 15, Holden distributed a career-best seven assists twice (at Eastern Kentucky on Jan. 21, against Austin Peay on Feb. 8). He also recorded 10 multi-steal performances with his career-high of four swipes coming at Southeast Missouri (Dec. 18) and against Eastern Kentucky (Feb. 18).
