SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – It was truly "moving day" in every sense of the word for the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team today as the Skyhawks jumped into first place in the team standings after a remarkable Round 2 of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.
Entering the day in a tie for fifth place in the 15-team standings, UT Martin carded a 281 (-7) – four shots better than any score in the field – today to lead the tournament going into tomorrow's final round. The Skyhawks two-day score of 566 (-10) is one stroke better than second-place Morehead State, who came into the morning with the lead before shooting even-par today.
"Today was special for the team," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "They got off to a great start and were feeding off one another nicely. We need to look at where we can improve and get ready for tomorrow. It's going to be a lot of fun."
The Skyhawks pieced together a phenomenal front-nine today, accumulating one eagle and 12 birdies against just four bogeys. UT Martin added nine birdies on the back-nine and landed three of its five members of the scoring lineup under par on the day.
Leading the way for the second day in a row was Nick Wolf, who shot a 67 (-5) today to leap atop the individual leaderboard. His Day 2 score was the best in the 77-man field. The junior from Murfreesboro, Tenn. registered six birdies and only one bogey today as his two-day total of 135 (-9) is two shots ahead of Jake Mynatt of Carson Newman and Joe Muschong of Morehead State for second place.
Bryson Morrell also was a major contributor to the Skyhawks' success today, as his 69 (-3) was just one stroke shy of his best collegiate round. A sophomore out of Knoxville, Tenn., Morrell played the final 13 holes at 5-under as his 69 was the fifth-best score out of any Round 2 participant.
"Bryson played great today and helped the team tremendously," Swafford said. "I'm thrilled for Nick to be in this position. He's put in the effort it takes to get here and is very deserving."
The third UT Martin golfer to post a red score today was Tate Chumley, who was 4-under par through 15 holes before settling for a 70 (-2). His day included a trio of birdies and an eagle on Hole No. 7 – a par-5 playing at 527 yards.
Ross Redmont completed the team scoring with a round of 75 (+3) today, collecting three birdies. Jack Story was 4-under through 12 holes today – including four birdies in the span of five holes to conclude the front-nine – before ending his round with a score of 78 (+6).
For the tournament, Chumley ranks just outside the top-10 with a 36-hole score of 142 (-2). Morrell (146, +2) and Redmont (147, +3) are separated by a single shot while Story accounts for a 151 (+7). Redmont continues to lead the event in par-3 scoring (2.50, -4) while Wolf tops the tournament in par-4 scoring (3.75, -5) and Chumley is tied for the individual lead in par-5 scoring (4.38, -5).
The Skyhawks will be in the final pairing tomorrow as they look to open the 2020-21 campaign with their second consecutive tournament victory. The squad will start at 11 a.m. CST from the teebox at Hole No. 1.
