SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – An impressive performance by Nick Wolf highlighted the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team's opening 18 holes today at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee Tech.
A Murfreesboro, Tenn. native, Wolf masterfully navigated the Sevierville Golf Club River Course today – ending his round with a 68 (-4). That score ranks fourth in the field of 77 golfers, two strokes behind co-leaders Dominic Barron Holden of Tusculum and Joe Muschong from Morehead State.
Wolf's day included a dominant front-nine where he shot 4-under, thanks in large part to an eagle on the par-5, 527-yard Hole No. 7. That was one of just two eagles in the entire field today as the reining All-Ohio Valley Conference honoree tacked on three birdies during the round. He did most of his damage on the par-3's, as he ranks fourth in the field in scoring (2.75, -1) on those holes.
Ross Redmont and Tate Chumley each shot even-par 72's today for the Skyhawks. Redmont topped UT Martin with five birdies – sinking three in a row on Holes No. 4 through No. 6 – while leading the tournament in par-3 scoring (2.50, -2). Chumley's scorecard included four birdies, including back-to-back red scores on the 15th and 16th holes.
The Skyhawks' fourth countable score came from Jack Story. The senior from Dickson, Tenn. carded a 73 (+1) and tapped in a pair of birdie putts in Round 1.
Ranking fifth in the tournament field in pars is Bryson Morrell, who completed the UT Martin lineup with 14 pars on his way to a 77 (+5).
As a team, the Skyhawks posted a 285 (-3) today, which ranks fifth out of 15 teams. UT Martin, who ranks second in the tournament with a 2.90 (-2) par-3 scoring average, enters Round 2 trailing leader Morehead State (279, -9) by six shots.
"We are off to a great start," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "Nick played great today – he put himself in positions to score well and executed. We have a plan for tomorrow to clean up a few things from today and are excited to get back out there as a team for the second round."
UT Martin will tee off the second round of the three-day event tomorrow from Hole No. 1 at 9:50 a.m. CST.
