PAIR OF SINGLES WINS NOT ENOUGH AS UT MARTIN TENNIS FALLS 5-2 AT MISSOURI

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The tandem of Sina Albersmeier and Mizuki Sakurai each collected singles victories for the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad today but Missouri proved to be too much in a 5-2 Skyhawk setback at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
The singles wins today were the second of the season for both Albersmeier and Sakurai as the duo is tied for the team lead in that category. Albersmeier came away with her first win of the season out of the No. 5 slot, defeating Rom Cardenas Rifka by a 6-2, 6-2 margin. Meanwhile, Sakurai posted her first victory out of the No. 6 position of the 2020-21 campaign, gutting out a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (6) comeback triumph over Olga Bienzobas Fernandez.
However, the high-powered Tigers out of the Southeastern Conference were too much to handle as Missouri improved to 13-4 overall. Jule Streif nearly came away with a win at No. 2 singles but was outlasted in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-1). Daphne Pratt also put up a fight for UT Martin at No. 3 singles before falling 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Aziza Aubin represented the Skyhawks at No. 4 singles but was defeated by a 6-2, 6-3 margin. Amelia Campbell occupied UT Martin's top spot in singles action, falling 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles, the Skyhawks' No. 1 pair of Campbell and Streif fell by a 6-3 margin. Aubin/Pratt and Albersmeier/Sakurai were slotted at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, as both teams were defeated 6-1.
UT Martin will take the next 11 days off from official competition before resuming its season-opening eight-match road swing with back-to-back matches against UAB (March 11) and Middle Tennessee (March 12).
