
UTM TENNIS ANNOUNCES SIGNING OF CANADIAN ARIANE SOULIGNY AS FIRST MEMBER OF 2022 CLASS

MARTIN, Tenn. – Continuing the program's rich history with signing elite-level talent from outside the United States, Head Coach Caitlyn Williams of the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad unveiled the first official signee for the team's 2022 freshman class out of the U.S.' neighbor to the north, a native of Canada's province of Quebec by the name of Ariane Souligny.
Rooted in athletics from a young age – so much so that she was involved in the provincial figure skating team before switching pursuits to tennis at the mere age of eight years old – Souligny has established herself as one of the best prospects in the Quebec region, achieving an individual ranking of #2 in the territory and inside the top 20 across the entire country.
"I am very excited to bring Ariane into the Skyhawk family", exclaimed Coach Williams in the wake of Souligny's commitment. "With four graduates next spring, we are in the process of rebuilding the team and Ariane is going to be a big part of this process. Her tennis play as a junior speaks for itself, and I am looking forward to her continued success in college".
Advancing to the Finals of both the U16 and U18 tournaments in the same year during the Bloomex Cup – Canada's largest annual national event – Souligny was selected for the prestigious honor of "Athlete Displaying Most Perseverance" earlier this month through the regional sports excellence organization, chosen among a district of over 500,000 citizens to receive that prize.
Adding to the list of her recent accomplishments prior to signing with the Skyhawks, the incoming freshman reached a pair of semi-final events in doubles competition over the past three weeks at the Junior ITF World Tour. On a scale from one to 16.50, Souligny was given a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) of 9.12 in 2020 before tournament play was interrupted by the eruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Seizing a win in Open level competition and multiple provincial events around the Quebec and Ontario regions, Ariane has appeared in numerous Canadian National tournaments, proving capable of reaching the Finals in singles play frequently across provincial rounds. Extensively training with World Top 20 Junior players throughout her prep career, Souligny will bring a high degree of notoriety to her collegiate debut next fall representing UT Martin.
