SKYHAWK TENNIS OPENS 2021 CAMPAIGN WITH A PAIR OF FRIDAY MATCHES AT TENNESSEE

MARTIN, Tenn. – Year Two of the Caitlyn Williams Era for the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis program will begin this week as the Skyhawks travel across the state for two matches against the Tennessee Lady Vols. The matches on Friday, Jan. 15 will begin at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. CST.
Williams guides the UT Martin squad to the Tennessee campus where she starred as a student-athlete from 2011-15. This will be the Skyhawks' first match in an official capacity since March 7, 2020 as the final eight matches of last season and five originally scheduled 2020 fall tournaments were wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Friday's matches against the Lady Vols begin a 2021 spring schedule that tentatively features 11 nonconference outings on the road. In addition to its road trip to Knoxville, UT Martin travels to regional opponents Lipscomb (Jan. 22), Chattanooga (Jan. 24), Missouri (two matches on Jan. 30), Western Kentucky (Feb. 5), Samford (Feb. 7), Louisville (Feb. 14), Alabama State (March 7) and UAB (March 11).
The Ohio Valley Conference opener will also serve as the first home match of the season for the Skyhawks, as UT Martin hosts Southeast Missouri on March 19. A three-match homestand (Murray State on April 2, Austin Peay on April 3, Jacksonville State on April 9) highlights the eight-match OVC schedule before the league tournament takes place on April 24-25.
The Skyhawk roster boasts 14 years of Division I experience, as a trio of seniors join two juniors and two sophomores to make up the returning class. Seniors Amelia Campbell, Mizuki Sakurai and Jule Streif, juniors Daphne Pratt and Sina Albersmeier and sophomores Aziza Aubin and Jillian Niedzialowski have chalked up 176 career victories during their UT Martin careers. That includes 34 wins against Ohio Valley Conference opposition as upperclassmen Campbell/Sakurai/Streif/Pratt have compiled extensive experience in that area.
During the abbreviated 2019-20 campaign, Aubin topped the Skyhawks in singles victories with eight during her rookie season. The veteran team of Campbell and Pratt garnered a team-high seven doubles wins while playing exclusively alongside each other at the No. 1 slot last spring.
The lone newcomer this season is Ariadna Ondo, who inked a National Letter of Intent with the Skyhawks last June. She was ranked amongst the top-250 of all Spanish amateurs by the Universal Tennis Rating organization and will look to carry over that success into her freshman season this spring.
Live stats will be available for both matches at the link above.
