NORMAN, Okla. – The Golf Coaches Association of America unveiled its 2019-20 All-Academic Team winners this afternoon and the University of Tennessee at Martin was spotlighted as one of the best academic teams in the nation.
The Skyhawks were one of only 56 Division I institutions to be featured on the GCAA's Presidents Special Recognition list, which requires a 3.5 team Grade Point Average or above. All in all, just 95 schools from across NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, NJCAA I and NJCAA II made the cut for the Presidents Special Recognition award.
Overall, UT Martin was one of 250 schools who earned the GCAA All-Academic Team award. This marks the second time in the last three years that the Skyhawks have brought home this accolade, also winning the award during the 2017-18 season.
To win the GCAA All-Academic Team honor, a team must have a minimum average GPA of 3.0 during the 2019-20 school year while every player who was listed on the official squad participation list at any point during the season must be included.
The Skyhawks accumulated a 3.71 team GPA in 2019-20, starting with a 3.67 GPA in the fall before a program record 3.75 GPA during the spring term. Eight of the nine UT Martin golfers generated at least a 3.60 GPA while no student-athlete was below a 3.14 GPA for the year. The trio of Ross Redmont, Luke Smith and Nick Wolf all boasted unblemished 4.0 GPA's for the season while Mason Chandler, Peyton Dix and Jack Story each accumulated 4.0 GPA's during the spring semester.
Today's announcement marks the second time the GCAA has recognized the Skyhawk program this summer, as Chandler, Redmont, Story and Wolf each nabbed Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar accolades on June 18.
Academics weren't the only area where UT Martin golf excelled in 2019-20. The Skyhawks led the Ohio Valley Conference with a 286.2 scoring average while winning five of their nine tournaments. A school record four UT Martin representatives received OVC postseason accolades in Story (All-OVC), Redmont (All-OVC), Wolf (All-OVC) and Jacob Uehlein (All-OVC Newcomer). Story capped off his remarkable season with the UT Martin Bob Carroll Male Athlete of the Year award.
