MARTIN, Tenn. – Through the end of the 2019-20 academic year, we will be posting a season recap for each University of Tennessee at Martin athletic program. This edition of the "Skyhawk Season in Review" series features the golf squad.
The UT Martin golf team began its dominance early, winning four consecutive tournaments for the first time in school history to close out the fall campaign. Overall, the Skyhawks won five of their nine tournaments and finished as runner-up in two more events.
UT Martin displayed incredible balance during the 2019-20 season. The Skyhawks, who were selected to finish second in the league's preseason poll, played the most rounds of any conference school and tied with Jacksonville State for the best scoring average (286.2) in the OVC.
Leading the way for UT Martin in 2019-20 was senior Jack Story. The lefty from Dickson, Tenn. captured medalist honors twice and ranked second in the OVC with a 71.0 scoring average. He was a three-time OVC Golfer of the Week selection and also became the first Skyhawk representative to win an OVC Golfer of the Month accolade when he accomplished that feat in September.
Nick Wolf (Golfer of the Month for October) and Ross Redmont (Golfer of the Week on March 4) were additionally recognized by the OVC during the 2019-20 campaign.
Overall, Story (71.0), Redmont (71.9), Wolf (72.3), Tate Chumley (72.7) and Mason Chandler (73.1) ranked amongst the top-20 in the OVC in scoring.
In September, it was announced that two-time OVC Coach of the Year Jerry Carpenter would retire at season's end after 18 years at the helm. Carpenter directed UT Martin to its first-ever OVC championship in 2016 while overseeing 26 All-OVC honorees, three OVC Tournament medalists, two OVC Players of the Year and three OVC Freshmen of the Year in his storied tenure.
Although the shortened season robbed Carpenter of his shot at another OVC championship, it was fitting that the Skyhawks sent him out a winner – as UT Martin topped the field at the Grover Page Classic in the season finale on March 9-10.
Austin Swafford – who wrapped up his third season as an assistant coach at his alma mater this past season – was tabbed as the third head coach in school history and is set to officially take over those duties on July 1.
