MARTIN, Tenn. – Through the end of the 2019-20 academic year, we will be posting a season recap for each University of Tennessee at Martin athletic program. This edition of the "Skyhawk Season in Review" series features the tennis squad.
It was a year of transition for UT Martin as seven-time Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year Dennis Taylor retired on Dec. 31 after coaching the team during the fall season. Taylor racked up 535 career victories over 32 seasons, guiding the program to nine conference championships during his legendary tenure.
On Jan. 6, Caitlyn Williams was announced as the ninth coach in Skyhawk women's tennis history. The former University of Tennessee Lady Vol standout collected her first collegiate head coaching victory on Feb. 9, a 6-1 road triumph at Alabama A&M.
UT Martin completed its fall and nonconference spring slate and was set to open OVC play at home against Southeast Missouri on March 13, one day after it was announced the rest of the season had been cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Freshman Aziza Aubin paced the Skyhawks in singles victories during the 2019-20 campaign, piling up eight wins in her first taste of collegiate tennis. Junior Mizuki Sakurai and sophomore newcomer Sina Albersmeier followed closely behind with seven victories.
In doubles, UT Martin's junior duo of Amelia Campbell and Daphne Pratt led the way with seven victories – playing alongside each other exclusively at the No. 1 slot in the spring.
Campbell upped her career combined win total to 54 while Sakurai (47), Pratt (30) and Jule Streif (24) additionally tacked on to their career body of work. Overall, all eight Skyhawks saw playing time in 2019-20 as the senior-less squad gained a valuable year of experience under their belts.
