JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad holds an 11-shot advantage over the rest of the field after 36 holes of play at the Grover Page Classic, held at Jackson Country Club.
The Skyhawks were responsible for the best two rounds of the day, carding a 292 (+4) during this morning's first round and a 294 (+6) in the second round this afternoon. UT Martin's 586 (+10) is 11 strokes better than second-place Green Bay as windy, chilly conditions ruled a majority of the day.
"It's always nice to lead an event," Skyhawk assistant coach Austin Swafford said. "The wind was tough today – it was between 15 and 20 miles per hour all day long. That impacted not just our scores but everybody's scores. Our goal for tomorrow is to shoot under par as a team."
In the individual standings, UT Martin boasts three golfers in the tournament's top-five while seven Skyhawks appear in the top-20. Leading the charge for UT Martin today was freshman Bryson Morrell, who held a share of the tournament lead through 18 holes thanks to an opening-round 68. He followed that with a 75 to give him a tally of 143 (-1) as the Knoxville, Tenn. native is one of just three golfers in the 58-man field to shoot below par today.
"Today was Bryson's first under par round on the collegiate level and it was also the first time he had played this course in a tournament setting," Swafford said. "He's worked hard all offseason – in practice and in the weight room. He does everything we have asked him to do and for him to be a co-leader after 18 holes and in third place through 36, he's definitely earned that."
Rounding out the top-five is Jack Story (144, E) and Ross Redmont (145, +1) while Nick Wolf (149, +5), Jacob Uehlein (149, +5), Tate Chumley (150, +6) and Mason Chandler (151, +7) all follow closely behind. Luke Smith also competed as an individual today for the Skyhawks, posting a score of 160 (+16).
Morrell's 68 this morning included four birdies and an eagle – taking place on Hole No. 8, a par-5 playing at 542 yards. Playing as an individual, Morrell ranks second in the tournament in par-3 scoring (3.00, E).
Story topped UT Martin in team scoring, collecting even-par 72's in consecutive rounds. Redmont (73), Wolf (73) and Chumley (74) notched countable scores this morning with Uehlein's 75 trailing closely behind.
The Round 2 scoring lead was shared between Story and Redmont (72) while Uehlein (74), Wolf (76) and Chumley (76) all provided quality scores in the blustery weather conditions.
Competing as an individual alongside Morrell and Smith, Chandler (77-74) finished strong with four of his five birdies coming in Round 2. Smith accounted for a birdie in each round while tallying scores of 78-82.
Story leads the event in birdies (11) while ranking third in both par-4 scoring (3.90, -2) and par-5 scoring (4.38, -5). Redmont's 26 pars are the second-highest total in the field while Wolf's 4.38 par-5 scoring average (-5) is tied with Story for third place in the tournament.
The Grover Page Classic wraps up on Tuesday, March 10 as the Skyhawks will go for their fifth tournament win of the 2019-20 campaign. UT Martin tees off on Holes No. 1-5 at 8:30 a.m. alongside Green Bay and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
