LOW SECOND ROUND HAS UT MARTIN GOLF IN TITLE CHASE AFTER DAY ONE OF GULF COAST COLLEGIATE

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. – Providing the best second-round score of the Gulf Coast Collegiate today was the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team, who sits in second place in the standings after 36 holes at Diamondhead Country Club.
After a 296 (+8) in the first round, the Skyhawks jumped from fourth place to second behind a 1-under score of 287 in Round 2. Overall, UT Martin's 583 (+7) is seven strokes back of tournament leader and host school New Orleans. The Skyhawks led the tournament with 107 pars today while tacking on 31 birdies and one eagle.
"Today had its highs and lows," UT Martin assistant coach Austin Swafford said. "Like last week, we still have a few things to clean up course management wise but we'll get there. We are in second place with a chance to win and looking forward to tomorrow."
Individually, the Skyhawks boast a pair of teammates who are tied for fifth place in the 56-man field. Ross Redmont and Nick Wolf each carded 143's (-1) today for UT Martin, posting identical scores of 74-69. Six of Redmont's team-best eight birdies came during the afternoon session while Wolf – who leads the tournament with a 2.88 par-3 scoring average (-1) – also sank six birdies in Round 2.
Jack Story opened his second round with an eagle on the par-5, 522-yard Hole No. 1, adding a birdie as part of an even-par round. He shot a 77 this morning and currently ranks 12th in the field with a 149 (+5).
The Skyhawks' best score this morning belonged to Tate Chumley as five of the junior's eight birdies on the day came in Round 1. His rounds of 73-77 (150, +6) have him sitting in 16th place in the individual standings.
Jacob Uehlein (152, +8) manned the fifth slot in UT Martin's scoring lineup today as the freshman produced a countable 75 in Round 1 and equaled Chumley (77) for the final countable score in Round 2. The Tullahoma, Tenn. native tapped in five birdie putts on the day.
Competing as an individual was Luke Smith, who tallied scores of 78-76 today for a two-round total of 154 (+10). The freshman from Covington, Tenn. accounted for three birdies on Day 1 of the tournament.
The Skyhawks will be paired with New Orleans and Samford for tomorrow's final round. UT Martin will be hitting off the first tee in nine-minute intervals from 8:45 a.m. to 9:21 a.m. Smith will tee off Hole No. 10 at 9:12 a.m. alongside Prairie View A&M's David Baker, Jr.
