BUCHANAN, Tenn. – The 13th annual Skyhawk Fall Classic got underway today at Paris Landing State Park, as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team is within striking distance of a tournament title after 36 holes of play.
The Skyhawks collected the best score of the first round, emerging as the only squad in the 13-team field to shoot under par (287, -1). UT Martin followed with a 295 (+7) in the afternoon round for a composite score of 582 (+6), currently trailing only Butler (577, +1) and Murray State (580, +4) headed into the third and final round tomorrow morning.
"The morning round was a solid performance, shooting under par as a team is always a goal of ours," Skyhawk assistant coach Austin Swafford said. "We accomplished that and were able to lead after the first round. The second round wasn't as bad as it looked. I think that if we improve our course management and improve where our misses are tomorrow, we will be right where we need to be. Our guys know which holes they can be aggressive on and which holes they need to be conservative – I am confident that they will bounce back tomorrow."
As a team, UT Martin tallied 32 birdies and a pair of eagles today as all seven Skyhawk representatives tapped in at least two birdies.
Nick Wolf will look to claim his first collegiate victory tomorrow as the junior out of Murfreesboro, Tenn. has put himself in prime position after a successful Day 1. He accounted for six birdies while carding a 70 this morning and a 73 in the afternoon to rank third in the field of 79 golfers. His score of 143 (-1) is just two strokes behind co-leaders Michael Cascino of Butler and Landon Albert of Tennessee State.
Jack Story shot identical 73's today while leading the team with seven birdies and one eagle – occurring in the first round on the par-5, 523-yard Hole No. 7. He and Mason Chandler (74-72) are tied for 14th with total scores of 146 (+2) as Chandler posted five birdies on the day.
Following closely behind is Tate Chumley (147, +3), who is in a tie for 16th place in the individual standings. Four of Chumley's six birdies today came in the first round, as he followed a 70 with an afternoon 77 that included an eagle on Hole No. 6 – a par-4 playing at 344 yards.
A trio of UT Martin freshmen also navigated the Paris Landing State Park course for the first time in their young collegiate careers today. Jacob Uehlein was a member of the Skyhawks' scoring lineup and came away with a score of 153 (+9) after rounds of 75-78. Playing as individuals, Bryson Morrell (80-77; +13) and Luke Smith (74-84; +14) are within only one shot of each other. Uehlein and Morrell both earned three birdies today while Smith chipped in a pair of birdies.
Round 3 is set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start as UT Martin's scoring five will be paired with Butler and Murray State on Holes 1-3. Morrell and Smith will start their days on Hole No. 16 and 17, respectively.
