MADISON, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team is in the driver's seat for its first tournament victory of the 2019-20 season after a resounding performance during the opening two rounds of the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational today.
The Skyhawks currently lead the field with a 563 (-5), which is the best score by a wide margin in the 18-team event. UT Martin will begin play tomorrow with a 13-stroke advantage over second-place Tennessee Tech (576, +8) in a stacked field that includes seven Ohio Valley Conference squads.
"The best part about today was that it was a team effort – we got to count everybody's score," Skyhawk assistant coach Austin Swafford said. "We have upperclassmen with experience leading the way and doing what we expect them to do. Our young guys are also playing well right now so we have a good mix of scorers. The team pushes each other in practice in a fun way and we are all pulling for one another. The result today speaks for itself."
UT Martin shot a 281 (-3) this morning and backed that up with a 282 (-2) during the afternoon round. Through 36 holes, the Skyhawks lead the field in par-3 scoring (3.08, +4), par-4 scoring (4.06, +5), pars (120) and eagles (3) while tacking on 26 birdies on the day.
Junior Tate Chumley guides a trio of UT Martin representatives in the top-10 of the individual standings. The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native is tied with Southern Utah's Jake Vincent with a 137 (-5) that leads the 99-man field. Chumley shot a 69 this morning which included four birdies before carding a 68 with five birdies in Round 2. He currently leads the field in par-4 scoring (3.78, -4) and ranks second in the tournament with nine birdies.
"Tate has been working hard all year long," Swafford said. "He's been so close at both of the first two tournaments and was a swing or two away from being three or even four strokes better. Today, all of his hard work just finally came together."
Tied for ninth place in the standings is the Skyhawk duo of Jack Story and Nick Wolf, who each compiled a 141 (-1) today. Story accounted for rounds of 71-70, following a four-birdie Round 1 effort with three birdies and an eagle this afternoon. Wolf's day included a pair of eagles on the par-5, 545-yard Hole No. 18 while also scattering in four birdies for good measure on his way to a 72-69.
Freshman Jacob Uehlein tied for fourth place in the individual rankings after an impressive first-round 69. The Tullahoma, Tenn. native was responsible for a clean round that included three birdies and 15 pars. Mason Chandler provided a countable score for the Skyhawks in Round 2, as he tallied a 75 (+4) that included one birdie and 12 pars.
Uehlein shot a 78 in the second round while Chandler's day began with a solid 72. Those two are tied with a score of 147 (+5) heading into tomorrow's final round.
Competing as an individual was UT Martin freshman Bryson Morrell, who began his day with a 78 before showing an improved score of 73 in the afternoon. His two-round total stands at 151 (+9) with 18 holes left to play.
The third round will feature a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. The Skyhawks will be paired with Tennessee Tech and Belmont and will tee off from Holes 1-3 at Gateway National.
