RICHMOND, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team continued its strong start to the season today at the Raising Canes Intercollegiate, as the Skyhawks are tied for first place after 36 holes at Arlington Golf Course.
UT Martin led the tournament with a 277 (-3) during today's morning round before posting a 284 (+4) this afternoon, settling for an overall score of 561 (+1). That score is tied with Northern Kentucky at the top of the 12-team standings, which includes seven Ohio Valley Conference schools. The Skyhawks lead the field with 37 birdies and added 106 pars today.
"It was a very good day for us – we had a lot of birdies to offset our bogeys," UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "We all played consistent golf and that showed by us counting everyone's scores while our individual had a solid second round. Our guys are competing like crazy and that's all I can ask. Solid play will give us a chance to win tomorrow."
Tate Chumley and Jack Story guided the Skyhawk attack today, as both players are tied for third place out of 74 golfers in the field with scores of 139 (-1). Chumley carded an even-par 70 during the first round before generating a 69 this afternoon, as he leads the field in par-3 scoring (2.63, -3). He sank nine birdies today, including five straight in the second round on the back-nine. He dialed up five birdies in the span of six holes on the back-nine during Round 1.
Nick Wolf posted 71's in both rounds today, leading the squad in par-5 scoring (4.25, -3) on his way to a 142 (+2). He carded eight birdies to rank 16th in the field after 36 holes. Ross Redmont also carded a 142 (+2) today, following up an even-par 70 this morning with a 72 in the afternoon. He watched eight birdie putts drop today, six of which came during the first round.
