INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the second straight year, the NCAA honored the University of Tennessee at Martin golf program as the Skyhawks were a recipient of the organization's Public Recognition Award.
The award is bestowed on teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports, based on the APR data released in May 2019.
UT Martin was one of 100 Division I men's golf programs and one of 1,328 Division I teams to garner the award. Overall, 36 Ohio Valley Conference squads were recognized today while the Skyhawks were one of five men's golf teams from the state of Tennessee (joining the likes of Belmont, Lipscomb, Tennessee Tech and Vanderbilt) to claim this award.
UT Martin's 2017-18 squad became only the fifth team in school history to bring home a NCAA public recognition award, joining golf (2016-17), women's tennis (2012-13 and 2004-05) and women's cross country (2004-05).
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance. A team's APR is the total points earned by the team at a given time divided by the total points possible, multiplied by 1,000. It includes four years (this year's numbers included the school years of 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18). High –performing teams receiving public recognition awards posted APR scores ranging from 985 to a perfect 1,000.
