NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference head tennis coaches voted University of Tennessee at Martin's Asel Jumamukhambetova to the league's first team this evening, marking the second time in her illustrious Skyhawk career that the senior had seized All-OVC honors.
Jumamukhambetova becomes just the 10th different UT Martin honoree to chalk up All-OVC first team accolades and first since Sarah Candeloro in 2017. The Atyrau, Kazakhstan native had previously garnered All-OVC second team status during her junior campaign in 2016-17.
"I am extremely proud of Asel," Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. "She definitely deserves the recognition. Everyone on our team has stepped up this year but Asel has made a giant step in her game. I wish she had another year to play because she has not yet reached the limits of her tennis ability. With Asel graduating, we will have some big shoes to fill next year – we will definitely miss her."
Tonight's All-OVC mention validates a remarkable senior season for Jumamukhambetova, who was highlighted as the league's seventh-best returning player coming into the year. She posted a team-best 10-4 singles record during the fall season, including an impressive flight championship in the prestigious Roberta Alison Fall Classic hosted by Alabama in October. She also added a team-best nine doubles wins during the fall while mostly paired up alongside fellow senior Jemima Potter.
Jumamukhambetova's momentum kept rolling throughout the spring, as she performed well against nonconference opposition before elevating her game against OVC foes. Playing exclusively at No. 1 throughout the year in both singles and doubles, she managed a team-high eight singles wins during the spring and tacked on six more dual doubles victories.
Jumamukhambetova pieced together a six-match winning streak in singles from March 5 through April 6, which included victories in her first five OVC decisions. During that same span, she also completed a three-match doubles winning streak in conference play, culminating in an OVC Player of the Week nod on April 10 – the second weekly award of her career.
All in all, Jumamukhambetova ranked atop UT Martin's list in singles wins (18) and OVC singles wins (five) in 2018-19. Her 15 victories and four OVC wins in doubles competition each ranked second on the squad.
Jumamukhambetova's 67 career singles victories rank ninth in Skyhawk tennis history. She has 123 combined wins and 56 doubles victories to her credit as she boasted a 36-23 record (.610 winning percentage) in her career against OVC opponents.
Jumamukhambetova will make her fourth appearance in the OVC Championship tournament tomorrow, as No. 6 seed UT Martin clashes against No. 3 Murray State in the league quarterfinals. The match will be played at Hadley Park and will start at 10 a.m.
