Day 2 Results
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team whittled nine strokes off its opening round score today as the Skyhawks completed Round 2 of the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Championships at the Fighting Joe Course at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
          Â
UT Martin shot a 294 (+6) today, climbing up one spot in the team leaderboard to ninth place. As a whole, the Skyhawks churned out 14 birdies to show the second-best improvement in the 11-team field, producing a two-round tally of 597 (+21).
          Â
"We were much better today," UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "We had two players under par and that helped out our score. We didn't have to count a triple bogey today but we still had too many double bogeys today, if we eliminate those – we'd be in good shape. I'm proud of the guys for bouncing back – I thought everybody competed today. If we have a good round tomorrow, we can finish up the tournament on a good note."
          Â
All-OVC performer Ross Redmont and Tate Chumley tied for the team lead today as each Skyhawk carded an OVC Championship career-low round of 70 (-2). Redmont managed a team-best five birdies – four of which came in the first seven holes – to go along with 10 pars. Chumley dialed up four birdies (all in the span of seven holes) while chipping in 12 pars.
          Â
Nick Wolf (76, +4) and Cameron Smith (78, +6) completed UT Martin's team scoring as each player tallied one birdie on the day. Jack Story posted three birdies on the day but was hurt by a difficult back-nine and finished with an 85 (+13).
          Â
Overall, Chumley ranks in a tie for 11th place in the 55-man field with his two-round score of 142 (-2). Redmont and Wolf have each notched a score of 148 (+4) through 36 holes and are followed by Smith (160, +16) and Story (166, +22).
          Â
Paced by individual leader Jesus Montenegro (135, -9), Jacksonville State took over the team lead after Round 2 with an overall score of 559 (-17).
          Â
The final round of the tournament takes place on Tuesday, April 23 as the Skyhawks will be paired with Morehead State and Tennessee Tech. Story (8:50 a.m.) is UT Martin's first golfer off the tee and will be followed by Smith (9 a.m.), Wolf (9:10 a.m.), Redmont (9:20 a.m.) and Chumley (9:30 a.m.).
