BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the second time in her storied University of Tennessee at Martin career, senior Asel Jumamukhambetova was crowned as Ohio Valley Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week today.
Jumamukhambetova, who hails from Atyrau, Kazakhstan, also won the OVC's weekly award on March 8, 2017. She is the first Skyhawk to win this accolade since Sarah Candeloro nabbed the award on April 12, 2017.
The Preseason All-OVC honoree went 5-1 over a trio of OVC matches last week, competing at No. 1 in both singles and doubles. That includes a 3-0 mark in singles, extending her winning streak to six matches overall. Jumamukhambetova also went 2-1 at doubles last week, with her only loss coming on a narrow 7-5 setback at undefeated Austin Peay.
Jumamukhambetova is currently the only OVC player to boast a perfect 5-0 record at No. 1 singles in 2019. Her singles victory over Claudia Yanes Garcia at Austin Peay on Saturday was the first singles loss for the Governors in OVC play (previously 23-0).
On the season, Jumamukhambetova boasts a team-best 18-9 singles mark while playing exclusively at No. 1. She is also tied for the team lead with 14 doubles victories in 2018-19. She is the owner of 122 combined career victories (67 singles, 55 doubles), including a stellar .660 winning percentage in conference play.
Jumamukhambetova and the Skyhawks return to action with their final road matchup of the season on Friday, April 12 against OVC foe Jacksonville State.
